“You could consider me an OKALA Charter Member since joining in 1997. My first friends in the industry were OKALA members. We looked forward to the annual conferences where we could network & ask for help solving new & difficult challenges. EVERYTHING was new & challenging then, like the assisted living regulations recently promulgated! Then as now, I would call my OKALA Executive Director to wade through the scary state surveys. How are other administrators handling this or that deficiency? Is there a precedent for this? Or…scariest thing yet…what is the name of a good attorney? Out of the fog of those first few years of learning we emerged laughing about our blunders when we gathered at the next conference. I clearly remember a break out session I dared to attend titled “For Assisted Living Owners”. I received a warm welcome & began to dream that I might even do such a thing! So here I am 14 years later — an owner of a family-owned Christian assisted living for high-functioning seniors in Enid, OK. And still looking forward to the next OKALA Conference to see some friends who understand like no others what we do & why. Thank you OKALA for your guidance & support through all these years.”

To me, as the Administrator of an Oklahoma assisted living facility, the benefits of belonging to an organization such as the Oklahoma Assisted Living Association is three fold. First, the prestige of belonging to such an organization proves that we strive to be the best at what we do, and we want our residents and families to be aware of that. Second, we have so many resources at our disposal. We have OKALA staff who can provide assistance to us at the touch of a keypad or by a quick phone call. The OKALA staff are never too busy to assist. And third, and perhaps the most important, the OKALA is at our side during our State inspection/surveys. If we have questions and need quick answers during surveys, they are there. They provide us with a comfort zone in a sometimes-tense situation. They fight for us where we can’t. I myself have attended many of their courses, they are always beyond the expected. Melissa Holland is one of a kind, she is a true leader but yet still has a servants heart. The staff at Forest Hills Assisted Living is proud to be members of the OKALA.
